Dr. Darwin Prater Spiller is executive director of the Lake Highlands Learning Community, composed of more than 11,000 preK–12 students. He has served as classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, and school support officer.
During his times as principal of Stults Road Elementary, he was labeled a “power principal.” He led his campus to a front-cover feature story in Texas School Business magazine for his work in establishing results-driven professional learning communities. As a result of dramatic increases in student performance, Stults Road Elementary became a National Distinguished Title 1 School. His journey is featured in the book Growing into Equity: Professional Learning and Personalization in High-Achieving Schools.
Dr. Spiller is a board member of the Texas Alliance of Black School Educators. He is also president of the Richardson Area Alliance of Black School Educators, where he is in his second term. He is an active member of the National Alliance as well. In addition, Dr. Spiller is also a member of the Richardson East Rotary.
Dr. Spiller earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Langston University and a master’s degree in educational leadership and policy study from the University of Texas at Arlington. He completed his doctoral degree in educational leadership at Dallas Baptist University. His research provided recommendations for improving teacher retention.
