Master mathematics within the PLC framework

Achieving excellence in mathematics teaching and learning begins by understanding the thousands of instruction and assessment decisions teachers and teacher teams make every lesson, every unit, every year. This high-energy, intensive, and collaborative K–12 workshop is led by nationally known experts with firsthand experience in making those decisions: K–12 mathematics education thought leader, author, and PLC at Work™ expert Dr. Timothy D. Kanold and mathematics content specialist Mona Toncheff.

Teachers, teacher teams, instructional coaches, team leaders, and administrators will receive a deeper understanding of the hope for student learning provided by the 10 high-leverage actions of teacher teams; the impact of those practices on daily mathematics instruction and assessment; and the necessary formative assessment protocols that will result in significant improvement in student learning. You will learn how to prepare and develop, unit by unit, meaningful mathematics instruction and assessment processes with the rigor and coherence expected by all states.

Based on the 10 high-leverage teacher team actions from their newly released Beyond the Common Core: Mathematics in a PLC at Work™ series, the presenters will help participants:

  • Acquire a deeper understanding of the formative assessment impact on student learning and classroom instructional practice.
  • Implement the sustainable elements of PLC teaching-assessing-learning cycle.
  • Use and design daily lesson-planning protocols and instruction that reflect the expectations of rigorous more complex reasoning and highly engaged and efficient student learning experiences.
  • Understand how to use and develop higher-level cognitive demand tasks aligned with more rigorous state assessments for both the Common Core and other standards.
  • Design, evaluate, and use high-quality unit-by-unit common assessment instruments and homework protocols aligned with the critical questions of a PLC.
  • Refine your focused and targeted response to intervention actions at the end of a unit of instruction
  • Improve your use of technology as an appropriate tool.

“I am ready to meet with the teams in my school and develop their skills in the area of looking, analyzing, and making decisions in the best interest of the student.”

Kathryn Zanin, teacher, Tuscon Unified School District, Arizona

“In the past, I’ve focused generically on teaching and learning, and the presenter really broke that down to include increased focus and urgency for assessment. I’d started down that path, but this session really helped my thinking and planning.”

“I loved the presenter’s energy, positive yet realistic tone, and sense of humor.”
