Tabitha Watjen

Tabitha Watjen is the social-emotional learning (SEL) facilitator for the East Providence School District in Rhode Island. She has more than 20 years of experience, having previously served as a middle and high school special educator and a district induction coach.

During her tenure at the East Providence School District, Tabitha developed a robust induction program that supported all preK–12 teachers through their first year in the classroom. Her passion for supporting beginning teachers was enhanced by her experience with the Rhode Island Department of Education as a statewide induction coach. This unique experience allowed her to work with school districts throughout the state, providing ongoing, job-embedded professional development for first-year teachers.

Additionally, Tabitha helped to create and lead the East Providence School District’s Teacher Leadership Academy, which provided leadership training for any teacher interested in developing their skills. Currently, she is working to develop districtwide systems and supports to increase awareness and understanding of SEL in order to ensure that the needs of faculty, staff, and students are met.

Tabitha earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and special education and a master’s degree in secondary special education from Rhode Island College, as well as a graduate certificate in professional development from Walden University.
