Janet Nuzzie is a published author with over 28 years of experience in mathematics education, including curriculum and leadership roles at the district, regional, and state level. She specializes in supporting campus leaders and teachers in the implementation of professional learning communities and has facilitated her district’s implementation of a multitiered system of supports for mathematics intervention.

Janet Nuzzie

Janet Nuzzie serves as the intervention specialist for K–12 mathematics in the Pasadena Independent School District in Texas—the largest Model Professional Learning Communities (PLC) at Work® school district in North America—where her responsibilities include facilitating a districtwide multitiered system of supports (MTSS) for students in need of intervention in mathematics. Prior to this role, Janet was the instructional specialist for elementary mathematics, where her responsibilities included managing the district’s curriculum and assessment program as well as providing professional development for mathematics coaches and teachers. She has focused her efforts on building the capacity of campus-based mathematics coaches and teacher leaders by assisting in the creation and facilitation of the district's Instructional Coaching Institute, PLC Teacher Leader Collaborative, and Emerging Teacher Leaders in Mathematics Education Academy as well as the district’s MTSS Guiding Coalition Collaborative.

Janet served two terms as the president of the Texas Association of Supervisors of Mathematics, two terms as the vice president (elementary) of the Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics, was a program chair for the Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching, and is the president-elect for the Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She has served on numerous state and regional advisory committees and has presented at local, regional, state, and national conferences including those hosted by the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. In 2021, Janet received the Eads Leadership Excellence Award from the Texas Association of Supervisors of Mathematics; in 2020, she received the Nancy Trapp Leadership Award from the Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Janet coauthored and coedited Mathematizing Your School with Dr. Nicki Newton, a book in which she and eight other educators from her district describe a process for mathematizing students, classrooms, parents, campuses, staff, and districts. She also coauthored A Teacher’s Guide to Math Workshop with Dr. Nicki Newton and Dr. Alison Mello, a book that describes a process for implementing math workshops into any mathematics classroom. While serving at the Region 4 Education Service Center, she was a contributing author and master trainer for several modules facilitated by the Texas Education Agency and the Texas Regional Collaborative as well as a contributing author to 25 publications focused on mathematics instruction.

Janet earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Texas A&M University and a master’s degree in teacher leadership from Lamar University.
