Alvin Thomas

Alvin Thomas, EdD, serves as a principal in a large metropolitan school district in Georgia and a part-time professor at Kennesaw State University and Georgia State University.

He’s also served as an assistant principal at the high school level, a student behavior program specialist at the district level, and a middle school teacher. With 17 years of experience, he has dedicated himself to being a lifelong learner and creating successful learning environments for his students.

Dr. Thomas began leading Tapp Middle School in 2019, where he guided his team in implementing the professional learning communities (PLC) process and restructured the school to ensure students had the time and support to achieve at high levels. With his leadership and guidance, the staff began focusing on learning, not teaching; collaborating, not isolating; and getting real results. The commitment to the PLC process led to the school being named a Model PLC at Work® school in 2022.

His administrative experience includes being an instructional leader in Title 1 schools. Dr. Thomas demonstrated a deep understanding of curriculum development, instructional strategies, and student support systems. His desire to foster collaborative environments and focus on essential standards has paved the way for improved student outcomes. He was selected to be a part of his district’s PLC task force as well as the principal PLC lead for his area and numerous principal focus groups within the district. Dr. Thomas is also a panel member at the Center for Urban Leadership at a local university.

Dr. Thomas earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health and a master’s degree in administration and supervision from the University of West Georgia. He also holds a specialist’s degree in educational leadership and administration from Berry College, and he earned his doctorate in educational leadership from Kennesaw State University in 2015.
