Maria Espinoza

Maria Espinoza, EdM, is the principal of Freeport Elementary, a Model Professional Learning Community (PLC) at Work® school in Freeport, Texas. During her 17 years of experience in education, she served as a bilingual teacher, reading and math interventionist, and dyslexia specialist. Currently she leads the only early childhood campus in the district, serving preK–2 students. She specializes in early childhood education and implementing the PLC process to help underperforming schools.

Maria’s dedication to her school, students, and staff is reflected in her achievements and awards. She was recognized as Teacher of the Year 2004–2005 at Velasco Elementary, and she was nominated for the H-E-B in Excellence in Education Award for administrators. As principal of Freeport Elementary, she led her school to be recognized as a Model PLC at Work school. She credits the school’s transformation and success to the PLC process and a strong belief that all students can learn. The school’s story was featured in the book, What About Us?: The PLC at Work® Process for Grades PreK–2 Teams, by Diane Kerr, Tracey A. Hulen, Jacqueline Heller, and Brian K. Butler.

Maria graduated summa cum laude with a master’s degree in education administration from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.
