Brian K. Butler

Brian K. Butler is an education consultant who has worked with thousands of schools throughout the United States, Australia, and Canada, presenting on the PLC at Work® and RTI at Work™ models. Brian is a retired principal who last served at Mason Crest Elementary School in Fairfax County, Virginia, in 2017. Under Brian’s leadership, Mason Crest received Solution Tree’s first annual DuFour Award in 2016. The honor, named for Professional Learning Communities at Work process architect Richard DuFour, credits high-performing PLCs that demonstrate exceptional levels of student achievement. The recipient of the DuFour Award is the highest award that a PLC at Work school can achieve.

Brian has also been a principal and an assistant principal for other schools in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). While principal of Mount Eagle Elementary (2006–2011), it was also recognized as a Model PLC at Work school. During his tenure, Brian was named a finalist for FCPS Principal of the Year for demonstrating superior leadership qualities and creating an exceptional educational environment. As assistant principal of Lemon Road Elementary, Brian, along with Principal Carolyn Miller, helped lead staff to high levels of collaboration—an approach he shares with parent groups, teachers, school staff, and administrators to encourage teamwork among stakeholders. Lemon Road was also a Model PLC at Work school.

A former professional basketball player in the European League, Brian has a bachelor’s degree in speech communications from The George Washington University, a teacher’s certification in physical education and a master’s degree in school counseling, both from George Mason University, and an administrative endorsement from the University of Virginia.
