Jack Baldermann serves as principal at Westmont High School, the 2020 recipient of the DuFour Award as the best professional learning community in the country. He has also led two different schools to be recognized as National Model Professional Learning Communities. Jack and the team at Westmont High School have implemented PLC concepts and led the school to become one of the most improved and top-performing schools in the nation.
Since PLC implementation, Westmont has achieved a true 99 percent graduation rate, including 100 percent of all African American and Latino students graduating on time six years in a row. Westmont (a Title 1 School outside Chicago) has also built one of the most improved and top-performing Advanced Placement programs in the country, a genuinely cohesive staff, significantly decreased discipline incidents, and achieved double-digit increases on state testing that far exceed performance expectations.
Jack has served as an educational leader in several high-poverty districts and supported five different schools in achieving National Model Professional Learning Community recognition. In 1996, he was one of the first leaders in the country to implement PLC concepts, as outlined by DuFour and Eaker, as principal of Carl Sandburg High School (enrollment 3,500). He has also served as superintendent, director of secondary schools, and teacher in his 30 years as an educational leader.
Jack is passionately committed to serving his colleagues as a consultant and mentor. You can learn more about the work done by Jack and the Westmont staff by viewing the video submission “Westmont High School DuFour Award 2019.”
