Deconstructing Depth of Knowledge (DOK): A Method and Model for Deeper Teaching and Learning (edWeb Webinar)

Depth of Knowledge continues to be a focus and priority in education. However, if your understanding of Depth of Knowledge is cloudy, you’re not alone. In this webinar, you will learn how Depth of Knowledge clarifies what exactly students must learn and how deeply students must understand and use their learning. You will also learn how the DOK Levels can be used to plan and provide teaching and learning experiences that are standards-based, socially and emotionally supportive, and student responsive.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand how Depth of Knowledge clarifies the cognitive demand of academic standards, curricular activities, and assessment items.
  • Deconstruct the learning intention of academic standards and performance objectives to clarify what exactly students must learn and confirm how deeply students must understand and use their learning in a certain context.
  • Designate the DOK Level of academic standards, curricular activities, and assessment items based on the demand of the task students must complete, the mental processing students must perform, or the response students must provide.
  • Use the DOK Levels as a multitiered system of supports for delivering instruction, responding to intervention (RTI), and extending or enriching student learning.
  • Compare the demand and expectations of DOK teaching and learning experiences to TV quiz shows such as Jeopardy! and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (DOK 1), instructional TV shows such as The Joy of Painting and 30 Minute Meals (DOK 2), skills-based reality TV competitions such as LEGO Masters and Top Chef (DOK 3), and business reality TV competitions such as Kitchen Nightmares and Shark Tank (DOK 4).
