Julie A. Schmidt

Julie A. Schmidt recently retired as superintendent of schools for Kildeer Countryside Community Consolidated School District 96 in Illinois. The district began its professional learning community (PLC) journey 22 years ago, and all seven schools have been recognized as Model PLC at Work® schools. Julie A. Schmidt

Julie A. Schmidt recently retired as the superintendent of schools for Kildeer Countryside Community Consolidated School District 96 in Illinois. The district began its professional learning community (PLC) journey 22 years ago, and all seven schools have been recognized as Model PLC at Work® schools. Woodlawn Middle School in District 96 was the 2018 DuFour Award winner. As the largest feeder district to Adlai Stevenson High School, District 96 schools have received seven Blue Ribbon Awards of Excellence, five during Julie’s tenure as superintendent.

With more than 33 years in education, she has been a superintendent, an associate superintendent, a school psychologist, an assistant to the superintendent, a director of student services, and an assistant director of special education (early childhood through high school). A respected author, speaker and facilitator, Julie focuses on all aspects of PLC work including leadership and change, collaboration between general and special education in a PLC, and works with elementary and secondary schools. She served on the national PLC advisory board for Solution Tree for four years.

Julie was recognized by her peers as the Lake County Superintendent of the Year in 2016 and by the State of Illinois as a Distinguished Superintendent in 2017. As a member of the Illinois Association of School Administrators, she served on the board of directors as statewide professional development chair and the Vision 20/20 guiding coalition at the state level. She was elected to the National Suburban School Superintendents, an organization of fewer than 150 superintendents across the United States. Julie served as president of the executive board of the Exceptional Learners Collaborative, of which District 96 is a founding member. Julie is a co-author of Yes We Can! General and Special Educators Collaboration in a Professional Learning Community and a contributing author to Professional Learning Communities at Work and High Reliability Schools as well as Women Who Lead.
