Nathan Meyer

Nathan Meyer, EdD, is an assistant superintendent for accelerated improvement for Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Kentucky. Previously, he served as principal and assistant principal at Fern Creek High School and taught social studies in urban, low-socioeconomic, multicultural schools in Illinois, Virginia, and Kentucky. Dr. Meyer played a vital role in professional learning communities and response to intervention implementation when Fern Creek was identified as a persistently low-achieving school in 2010 and underwent the restaffing turnaround model. The results have been dramatic. After being identified in the bottom 5 percent of schools in Kentucky, Fern Creek High School moved past the 75th percentile ranking. Graduation rates climbed, proficiency rates increased, novices reduced, and college- and career-readiness rates soared, while keeping a low teacher turnover rate.

Dr. Meyer and his team of teachers and administrators at Fern Creek High School have received national recognition as an example of sustained urban turnaround. Fern Creek High School won the 2017 DuFour Award from Solution Tree as the nation’s top example of a PLC at Work. In addition, the school was awarded the 2016 National Principals Leadership Institute (NPLI) School Innovation and Change Award and was visited by former US secretary of education Arne Duncan in 2015. Dr. Meyer and his school were featured in WestEd’s Center on School Turnaround 2015 article “Snapshots of School Turnaround” and are featured on AllThingsPLC.info as a model PLC school.

Dr. Meyer received his bachelor of science degree in history from Eureka College, a master of education in curriculum and instruction from George Mason University, and a specialist in education and doctor of education degree from the University of Louisville.
