Redefine effective grading and reporting

The most effective grading practices provide accurate, specific, timely feedback designed to improve student performance. Unfortunately, students and their parents state that they don۪t understand the grades received, and current grading practices often demoralize students rather than spur them on to continuous improvement. This workshop will challenge antiquated practices like grading curves, zeroes, and averaged grades. Instead, our assessment experts will provide you with research-based options for grading and reporting that are fair, motivating, and meaningful to both students and parents.

Participants are encouraged to attend as a team. Whether your purpose is to apply more meaningful and impactful grading practices in your own classroom, train your colleagues, or refine grading and reporting in your school or district, this workshop is for you. Time will be provided to support the collaborative planning process. A team laptop will also be helpful to save your work.

  • Acquire strategies to ensure grading is based on clear standards or competencies.
  • Understand how to use student data notebooks successfully.
  • Reflect on present practices to determine their alignment with evidence of effectiveness.
  • Review samples of report cards that are meaningful to students and parents.
  • Apply tools and templates to support the efficient use of feedback for individuals and teams.
  • Discover strategies that ensure students own their learning and are motivated to greater achievement.
  • Examine grading practices that are based on mastery.
