Alex Hughes is the principal of Central School in Madison County, Alabama, a Model Professional Learning Community (PLC) at Work® school. Leading as principal since 2007, he ensures that all students under his care learn at high levels. Alex previously served as a special education aide, special education teacher, coach, and assistant principal.

At Central School, Alex fosters a culture that loves its students and does the work it takes to see each one of them succeed. He bases decisions on data and looks for ways to improve instruction through information. Alex was inspired to implement lasting change after attending a professional development session that introduced the content of Learning By Doing with a focus on essential standards. Striving to help students achieve at the highest level, he led his school on the journey to begin the PLC process.

During Alex’s time as principal, Central School has been named a Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Lighthouse School three times, and designated as a CLAS Banner School. In 2021, Central was recognized as a Model PLC at Work school. The awards and recognitions reflect the culture of the school, where the faculty and staff love their students and are committed to doing the work it takes for all students to succeed.

As a Solution Tree Associate, Alex is passionate about helping schools start and improve their journey in the PLC process. Through his training and experience, he can provide solid and sensible ways to create high student achievement for all students.

Alex earned a master’s degree in special education from Alabama A&M University and a bachelor's degree from Athens State University in business administration. While teaching and coaching, he earned an education specialist degree in instructional leadership from Tennessee State University.
