You Can Learn: Building Student Motivation, Ownership, and Efficacy Through the PLC Process Workshop

Syracuse, New York | October 9–10, 2024
$769.00

Schools that truly want to “create lifelong learners” must understand the influence that their actions in the classroom have on realizing this mission. Creating lifelong learners depends on more than good intentions; it depends on intentional actions designed to encourage students to realize that they have the capacity to move their own learning forward, regardless of life circumstances or experiences. While this truth is likely something that most teachers already believe, integrating practices that build student self-efficacy into daily instruction remains elusive in most classrooms. Creating lifelong learners happens only when teachers move from knowing about the importance of student self-efficacy to doing something about it.

Built around student-centered versions of the four critical questions of learning in the Professional Learning Communities at Work® process, this two-day workshop is designed to provide participants with practical strategies to translate the efficacy-building practices of collaborative teacher teams—setting goals, assessing learning, monitoring progress, and responding to evidence—into instructional practices that can be used to increase the academic motivation, ownership, and efficacy of every student. Participants attending as job-alike teams can center their work around strategies for their specific grade level or subject area. Those attending the workshop as vertical teams or members of a guiding coalition can develop tools specific to their individual roles and plans for championing vital academic dispositions within their building. Regardless of your role, all participants will learn to use calculated, research-based strategies to change how students see themselves—from a mixed mindset of their academic growth to truly believing themselves to be learners.

Participants will:

  • Study the research around self-efficacy and understand the impact it can have on student motivation, ownership, and achievement
  • Examine the overlap between efficacy-building practices used by collaborative teams in a PLC at Work and the instructional strategies that build capable, confident learners
  • Explore methods for establishing a commitment to learning in their students
  • Design a plan for communicating the mission, vision, values, and goals of the school community to students
  • Unpack student-centered versions of the four critical questions of learning:
    1. What is essential for me to know and be able to do?
    2. How will I know if I am making progress toward mastery?
    3. What steps should I take when I am struggling to master the essentials?
    4. How can I extend my learning after I have mastered the essentials?
  • Develop specific instructional practices to help students answer these four questions throughout a unit of study
