Kristen Hawley Turner

Kristen Hawley Turner is a professor and chair of education at the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies at Drew University, New Jersey. She works with teachers across content areas to implement effective literacy instruction and incorporate technology in meaningful ways. A former English and social studies high school teacher, she collaborates with K–12 colleagues and explores how they implement new literacies in their classrooms. Kristen is the founder and director of the Drew Writing Project and Digital Literacies Collaborative, a site of the National Writing Project. She has served on the site development leadership team for the National Writing Project and chaired the digital and media literacy working group for the Children and Screens Institute.

Kristen is the author of several journal articles and book chapters focused on adolescent digital language, technology, teacher education, and writing instruction. She regularly provides professional development workshops for teachers. She is the coauthor of Connected Reading and Argument in the Real World, and she edited Ethics of Digital Literacy. Her latest project includes Writing Still Matters with the National Writing Project. She is a cofounder of the Screentime.me research project, the Technopanic Podcast, and the Writers Who Care peer-reviewed blog. She presents regularly at local, state, and national conferences, including the annual convention for the National Council of Teachers of English.

Turner has been recognized for both her teaching and her scholarship, earning the Divergent Award and the Divergent Publication Award for Excellence in Literacy in a Digital Age Research (2024, 2021); National Technology Leadership Award (2014, 2024); Richard A. Meade Award (2022); Innovative Leader Award for the Conference on English Leadership (2016); Dean Robert Ready Award for Putting the Humanities to Work at Drew University (2021); and the Civic Engagement Faculty Leadership Award, Drew University (2020).
