Makini Sutherland

Makini Sutherland, EdD, is a mathematics educator with experience at the elementary, high school, and collegiate level. She has also facilitated training elementary teachers for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Jamaica mathematics project.

Dr. Sutherland has served on numerous committees at a teacher training college, contributing to the development of mathematics education in Jamaica. In her first year as a mathematics educator, she was honored as Teacher of the Year. Dr. Sutherland has also edited three mathematics publications in Jamaica geared toward the elementary level.

Dr. Sutherland earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from the University of the West Indies, Jamaica; a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Florida International University; and a doctorate in mathematics education at the University of Central Florida.

She has also served as a research assistant for two years at the Cognitively Guided Instruction Project at UCF. In 2018, she completed her dissertation focused on measuring instructional quality among preservice elementary mathematics teachers.
