Dixon Brooks

Dixon Brooks, PhD, has spent more than 30 years as an educator working to maximize learning opportunities for students, as well as district and school staff members, by leading cultural and systemic change processes that result in exceptional student achievement. Dr. Brooks continues to be a working practitioner at the South Carolina Department of Education in the Office of Leadership Effectiveness. He began his teaching career as a band director before serving as both a middle school and high school principal, and he spent five years at the district level as the chief instructional officer. Throughout his career, he has worked specifically in schools with traditionally underperforming student populations—both minority populations and students in poverty—implementing systems and processes that support teachers in empowering students of all backgrounds to succeed.

Outside of his school and district roles, Dr. Brooks also served in a variety of capacities on the board of the South Carolina Association for Middle Level Education to include president. In 2022, he was recognized with the Dr. Randy Wall Distinguished Service Award. His campuses have been recognized at the state and national levels. During his first principalship, the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform recognized his school as a School to Watch. Since that time, he has served as principal of two schools that have been recognized as Model PLC at Work® schools.

He earned his doctorate in educational administration from the University of South Carolina, where he wrote about middle school principals’ use of data-driven decision making.
