Brian Buckhalter

Brian Buckhalter, affectionately known as Dr. Buck, is a presenter with nearly 20 years of experience as a classroom teacher and district mathematics coach at the elementary and middle school levels. He specializes in helping teachers and students build conceptual understanding in tandem with procedural application of mathematics skills and concepts.

Dr. Buck is known for facilitating energetic and inspiring professional development sessions that empower educators to be active participants in the learning, discussions, and reflections in order to refine and improve their instructional practices. His approach allows educators to experience learning from their students’ perspectives and engage in professional discourse and planning that translate these experiences to effective instructional practices in the classroom.

He serves as the awards chair and Mississippi regional team leader for NCSM (formerly the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics) and is president of the Mississippi Mathematics Specialist Network. He is also a member of National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and a former member of NCSM’s writing team for the NCSM Essential Action Series: Framework for Leadership in Mathematics Education. He received the 2019 Griffin Family Impact Award and has been recognized as the 2018 NCSM Spotlight Member, the 2018 University of Mississippi School of Education’s Student of the Month, and the 2010 Oxford School District Teacher of the Year.

Dr. Buck earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Dillard University and master’s and doctoral degrees in elementary education with an emphasis in mathematics and science from the University of Mississippi.
