John Murtell

With more than 30 years’ education experience, John Murtell is a former assistant superintendent in Texas. In this role, he supervised elementary principals and worked closely with priority schools to improve their academic standing.

He began his career in education on the island of Guam working as a high school English, ESL, and special education teacher. During his tenure, he had the opportunity to undergo the accreditation process which inspired him to pursue a master’s degree in educational leadership and curriculum development. After six years of teaching, John moved into the role of a high school campus assistant principal.

After moving back to the United States, John took a position as an assistant principal in Texas City, Texas, where he worked at a campus that embraced the middle school concept of block scheduling and implementing professional learning communities (PLCs). He went on to serve as a middle school campus principal in Krum, Texas, and as a middle school principal in Grand Junction, Colorado. During this time, John was heavily involved in a statewide STEM consortium and implementing problem-based learning to improve student outcomes.

After pursuing his superintendent’s license, John served as a director of general education in Lake Jackson, Texas, where he worked closely with district directors and content coordinators to develop and implement curriculum and improve instructional strategies. He then moved into the position of assistant superintendent.

After 33 years in public education, John retired to focus on providing professional development for educators. He has given numerous presentations in the areas of response to intervention, PLCs, assessment and grading, and state-driven initiatives.
