Karen Johnson

Karen Johnson is the coordinator of Language Acquisition for the Pleasanton Unified School District Pleasanton, California, where she is working alongside district personnel to implement the PLC at Work® process at the district level. Previously, she has served as a middle school and elementary school teacher and administrator, an intervention specialist, and a literacy coordinator in various districts in California, all with very diverse student populations.

She enjoys the challenge of working with high-performing schools to identify areas for growth and improvement as they both begin and improve their processes of PLC at Work implementation. She is passionate about the topics of equity, inclusion, and ensuring high levels of learning for all students, even students who make up only a small percentage of the student population.

Throughout her career in education, Karen has delivered professional development for teachers and administrators and has served as a literacy coordinator and coach in both small-group and one-to-one capacities. She presents on topics such as differentiated instruction, the components of a balanced literacy program, response to intervention, and the various components associated with PLC at Work. For her work in Pleasanton, she was nominated for the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Elementary Principal of the Year.

Karen earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of California at Berkeley; a bilingual, cross-cultural, language, and academic development (BCLAD) credential from San Jose State University; a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Santa Clara University; and an administrative services credential from California State East Bay.
