Michelle Garlick

Michelle Garlick is a former classroom teacher and instructional coach and currently serves as assistant principal at Woodlawn Middle School for Kildeer Countryside School District 96 in suburban Chicago. During Michelle’s service as a teacher and coach, the school earned distinction as a Model PLC at Work School, was awarded the Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence, and received the 2018 DuFour Award.

As a district leader, Michelle has led staff through the process of unpacking and prioritizing standards, developing rubrics and assessments, and standards-aligned instructional design to support learning for all. Michelle has worked to build and maintain a culture conducive to learning for students and staff within a high-functioning professional learning community. She is passionate about engaging adult learners in professional learning to ensure all students have access to a high-quality equitable learning experience.

Michelle is one of the coauthors of A Leader’s Guide to Reading and Writing in a PLC at Work® Secondary, which serves as a resource for leadership in implementing consistent and collaborative literacy instruction to develop proficient readers and writers at the secondary level. She received the Illinois State Board of Education’s Those Who Excel Award for Early Educators in 2012 with highest distinction for her work in supporting all learners. For over 15 years, Michelle has served on a teacher advisory board for a nonprofit energy education organization.

Michelle received a bachelor's degree in biology education from Illinois State University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Concordia University Chicago.
