Becky Symes

Becky Symes specializes in supporting new teachers and educator wellness as well as curriculum development, effective instruction, professional learning communities (PLC), and research-based literacy practices. She has experience as a literacy coach, instructional facilitator, curriculum developer, presenter, and classroom teacher.

Over the past several years, Becky has served as her district’s new teacher induction coordinator. In this role, she has developed a mentor program and a three-year support cycle for beginning educators. Becky helps educators take care of themselves so they can take care of their students, utilizing strategies from Dr. Tina H. Boogren’s research and resources.

Her work also includes helping design, implement, and apply curriculum through the PLC at Work® process. Her facilitation of a team-developed Guaranteed and Viable Curriculums has helped her school reach Model PLC at Work status, and schools within her district have become certified High Reliability Schools at levels 1, 2, and 3. Becky has also spent much of her career helping teachers implement best literacy practices through the RTI at Work™ framework.

Becky is a member of the University of Wyoming Literacy Research Board and the director of the WY BILT literacy grant. She has worked closely with Jan K. Hoegh and Maria Nielsen to incorporate proficiency scales, common formative assessments, and unit plans into the district curriculum.

Becky graduated from the University of Wyoming with her bachelor’s degree in elementary education with middle school and early childhood endorsements. She also has a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction and certifications in PLC at Work and LETRS®.
