Lazunia Frierson

Lazunia Frierson, EdD, is assistant superintendent of district and school effectiveness in a Georgia Model PLC at Work® District. She is a 24-year educator with district and school leadership experience and facilitates professional learning around continuous improvement for 37 schools. During her six years as executive director of elementary schools, Dr. Frierson coached principals on fostering positive school cultures that produce high levels of student learning. In her current position, she supports teachers and leaders at elementary, middle, and high schools.

Dr. Frierson’s passion for leading professional learning communities began when she transitioned from a high school English teacher to an elementary school assistant principal in 2002. She attended a conference on PLCs and, in 2005, received a copy of the book Whatever It Takes: How Professional Learning Communities Respond When Kids Don’t Learn, and this experience cemented her belief in the power of establishing schools as PLCs. Upon being appointed an elementary principal in 2007, she empowered her teachers with the knowledge of the three big ideas of a PLC: a focus on learning, a collaborative culture and collective responsibility, and a focus on results. Using these tenets, her school received numerous state awards for academic excellence.

Dr. Frierson received her bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Valdosta State University, her master’s and specialist degrees in administration and supervision from Georgia College and State University, and her doctorate in educational leadership from Valdosta State University. She has used her training as a certified National Association of Elementary School Principals mentor to assist principals and collaborate with educators on strategies for increasing achievement. She has a wealth of experience coaching and presenting within and outside of her district.
