Shawn Hurt is principal of Inkster Preparatory Academy in Michigan. As a school turnaround specialist, he has a laser focus on student achievement and transforming school culture.

During Shawn’s tenure at Inkster, the school has achieved 1.4 years’ growth in reading and 1.6 years’ growth in mathematics. In 2017, the school was selected as an Innovative School District for showing great strides in strengthening rigorous learning for all students, increasing student achievement, and building a culture of innovation.

Previously, Shawn served as principal of Discovery Arts and Technology. With Mr. Hurt’s leadership, the school worked to make significant improvements and was awarded School of the Year in Inkster, Michigan, for 2012–13. The school was also given a STEM award for attaining 1.7 years’ growth in mathematics according to 2012 Scantron results.

Mr. Hurt has spoken at numerous national conferences, with a strong focus on school turnaround and increasing student achievement in inner-city schools.

Shawn earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College, master of arts degree from Marygrove College, and an educational specialist certification from Western Michigan University.
