Ruby K. Payne, PhD, is an author, a speaker, a publisher, a business owner, and a career educator. Recognized worldwide, Dr. Payne has traveled extensively to present a variety of workshops based on her foundational work A Framework for Understanding Poverty and also on strategies for successfully raising student achievement and overcoming economic class barriers. An expert on the mindsets of economic classes and on crossing socioeconomic lines in education and work and for social change, she has trained tens of thousands of educators and other professionals in seminars throughout the world.

Dr. Payne's work stems from more than 30 years of experience in public schools as a high school department head, principal, and central office administrator of staff development. She has written K–12 curricula in all content areas, developed extensive staff development programs for 1,500 staff members, and assisted with the strategic plans of numerous organizations. She is known for helping students from all economic backgrounds achieve academic success and has received numerous awards for her contributions to education and the community. Dr. Payne has written more than a dozen books.

She received a bachelor's degree from Goshen College, master's degree in English literature from Western Michigan University, and doctorate in educational leadership and policy from Loyola University.
