Response to Intervention

Can educators be responsive to the specific needs of students without an equity lens? Absolutely not. Equity commands that we provide every student with what they need to be successful and RTI supports educators in understanding student learning and designing services and supports that address specific needs. Response to Intervention is a practice that will effectively promote equity in education for all students in a well implemented professional learning community framework. Equity is the heart of our response to intervention work in education.

If we have learned anything through teaching during this pandemic, it is that the term “behavior” doesn’t simply refer to a disruptive student. The term behavior refers to academic behaviors (skill-based) AND social behaviors (will-based) and both need to be taught and reinforced in every tier of systematic SEL supports at your school. Fostering positive behavior and SEL by utilizing the PLC at Work® and RTI at Work™ processes will boost your school’s positive school culture, increase attendance, improve behavior, prepare students for life, and address inequities in school discipline.

Jeff Byrnes is the current assistant superintendent for teaching and learning in the St. Helens School District in St. Helens, Oregon. With over 25 years of experience in education, Jeff specializes in the implementation of professional learning communities and multitiered systems of supports. He is certified to lead in Professional Learning Communities (PLC) at Work® and Response to Intervention (RTI) at Work™. He has also served as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal in Arizona and Washington.

Calli Lewis Chiu, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Special Education at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). Before joining CSUF in 2018, she was an assistant professor at California State University, Bakersfield, and Shippensburg University.
