Bob Sonju is an award-winning educational leader, author, and speaker known for his energetic and passionate commitment to making the work of schools and teacher teams simple, doable, and impactful. With a focus on practical strategies that lead to real results, he coaches teams and school leaders to create the conditions for lasting success—without adding unnecessary complexity.
A nationally recognized expert in professional learning communities (PLC) and response to intervention (RTI), Bob has led two schools to National Model PLC at Work® status, with one also earning the prestigious National Breakthrough School Award from the National Association of Secondary School Principals. As a district leader, he successfully implemented the PLC process across a system of over 50 schools, proving that collaboration and clarity can transform learning at the district level.
His belief in simple, high-leverage strategies is the foundation of his books, Simplifying the Journey and The Handbook for Highly Effective Teams in a PLC at Work®. He has also coauthored several other Solution Tree publications, including It’s About Time (Secondary), Best Practices at Tier 2 (Primary and Secondary), and Help Your Team. He has been featured in Principal Leadership magazine.
Recognized for his passionate leadership, Bob was named Principal of the Year by the Utah Association of Secondary School Principals and was a finalist for the prestigious National Principal of the Year. He holds a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and an endorsement in school leadership from Southern Utah University.
